Toto was formed in the year 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also well-known studio players working with Boz Scaggs) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. The name of the group came from the Latin word that translates to "all-encompassing" and was determined to explore every musical style.
In 1981 the third album by Toto Turn Back was a complete failure However, they resurface with their fourth album Isolation that features two hits including the title track and Roseanna. The album and tour made them a household name throughout the world.
After a hiatus of a few years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in 1986. It is a departure from the ballads that were featured on previous albums and includes some heavy rock. The album was their first to be certified platinum in North America.
In the course of recording the fifth album the group loses their manager and faces financial difficulties. They decide to change their name and create a new album with a new producer. The lead singer Fergie Frederiksen leaves the band and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman, and gives the band a much-needed boost.
In 1999, the band released Mindfields and begin an extensive tour across the globe. After a few weeks in Europe, the band heads to Japan for sold-out shows. After a brief hiatus, Toto resumes their recording and releases their first live album, Absolutely Live in 1993. The album features a cover of Weezer's song Hash Pipe as a response to the band covering Africa during their recent tour. Toto's touring lineup is completed by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.
