Espag handles are a type of multipoint locks suitable for casement windows like uPVC or wooden double glazing. They have a 7mm square spindle which fits into the gearbox on a uPVC window and when the handle is turned, it opens an array of locks around the perimeter of the window. Espag handles, also known as shootbolts, give more security than the single point lock that is found on older window frames.
There are a range of choices available, including inline and cranked handles that can be operated by either the right or left hand. You can even find a variety of ergonomically designed handles that are made to improve both the feeling of the handle and how it looks on your windows.
You'll need to measure the spindle size from the base of your uPVC handle if you want to purchase the correct replacement. This measurement is referred to as step height and can assist you in finding the ideal uPVC handle for your home.
It is possible to remove any screws which protect the screws that hold the handle in place, and if that's the case, you can use a screwdriver or pliers to take out the pins holding the handle. After removing the pins or screws that hold the spindle together you can take it apart to disassemble the handle.
After removing the handle you will be able to access the locking mechanism within the frame of the windows and take out the cockspur block that is located next to the handle. This will allow the
window replacement cost to be opened. The
replacement windows uPVC handles you ordered will be able to slide over the cockspur block and then into handle spindle to allow the
window panel replacement to reopen. Ideally, you should replace the wedge block cockspur with a new one whenever you replace your uPVC handle to ensure it is securely secured.
Cockspur
Cockspur handles are generally found on older uPVC and aluminium windows. The handle is closed and then turns onto a wedge-shaped plastic receiver catch. (Not to be confused with timber latches, which are also covered in this section.) They can be locked or non-lockable. They are available in a variety of nose sizes that can be adapted to the existing frame.
The handle locks using a slender spur (little triangle bit) pulling against a plastic wedge that is fixed to the frame. These are generally one way handles, however a deadlock lock cylinder that locks is a possibility to add security.
The replacement cockspur handles are also easy to put in. All you require is the correct backset and a new set (supplied). The backset is measured from the baseplate to the underside nose of the handle. Aluminium window frames are usually 9mm wide, whereas UPVC is 21mm wide. There are many other variations however it is essential to measure before buying the handle (see video below for how).
This kind of window handle can be substituted by simply unscrewing the existing handle and then removing the spindle, or in certain cases the whole handle assembly. The replacement handle can then be screwed into place with the help of pozidriv screws. The pozidriv screws are available in either zinc or brass finishes to match the existing hardware. Turn and Tilt
Tilt and turn windows are a popular European window style that has been in use for a long time in Europe however, it is only getting noticed in the United States. The windows combine the functionality of 3 window styles - tilt, in-swing and pivot. This makes them ideal for older homes as they can be used to offer more ventilation than standard window types.
When closed, tilt and turn windows lock as windows that are fixed in normal fashion. By turning the handle 90° or 180@ (depending on the type of tilt and turn window) the sash can be opened upwards and the window can be tilted in order to allow air circulation through the space at the top of the frame. This is a great option to let air circulate without the need to open a large window, which can be a safety risk if not properly secured when opening.
If the handle is turned 90@ or 180@ the sash can be fully opened, much like the door. This allows for complete air circulation which is especially beneficial for rooms that are smoky or where smells or smoke can accumulate. It also makes cleaning the outside of the glass much simpler since it can be done inside the home - a job that usually requires precarious ladders.
Tilt and turn windows are extremely secure. When they are locked in the closed position, they are difficult to open from outside, and they come with double seals that stop rainwater from entering the house when in the tilted in-swing position. This can be a particularly beneficial feature for older homes where burglars are more likely to target windows that can be opened via the side hinges.
Spade
There are a variety of handles that can be installed on upvc double-glazed windows. The two main kinds are Espag handles and Cockspur handles, then there's also tilt and turn handles blade or spade handles and monkey tail handles. The kind of handle you pick will depend on the style you prefer and the kind of windows you have.
To choose the appropriate replacement for your upvc window handle, you need to know how your existing handle is attached to the frame. This is known as handing. It is an essential element to consider, particularly when shopping online, as certain handle variations don't fit all windows. Some cockspur handles, for example, are angled while others are straight and can be turned left or right. You will also need the spindle size that is the distance between the base of handle and the head of handle.
Identifying if your windows require a restrictor is also essential when choosing the right handle. These are typically found in high-rise flats or commercial properties, but they're not required for homes that are mostly domestic. Lastly, you should also consider step height which is the distance from the bottom of the screw plate to the nose of the handle.
The word spade is derived from Old English spadu, spaedu or spada. It has been translated into many languages, including German spaten and Low German spathen. In the 1920s, during the Harlem Renaissance in New York City spade began to be used as a sexist term for black people. The term has since come to prominence in pop culture and is a widely-respected symbol of African American heritage and pride.
When replacing the handle of a Cadenza style handle, it is essential to select the correct size. Handles are available in straight and angled versions that differ by only a few microns. The handle head can vary between a D and T shape, or even have no handles at all.
