This is the most popular version of Roomba. It comes with all the bells, whistles and features. It uses a high tech AeroForce cleaning system, which offers twice as much suction power as other models. It is able to easily remove pet fur, lint and dirt, and mold spores and large chunks of debris.
It's more sophisticated than earlier Roomba models, thanks to advanced mapping technology and a more advanced memory system. It can be even started remotely via the iRobot HOME app.
It also comes with an option to create digital "Keep Out Zones in the app, which prevent the robot from entering certain areas of your house. It's a great choice for those who have children or pets and want to keep their mess out. However, it didn't do as well in our tests for pet hair in comparison to the Samsung Powerbot R7070 and Neato Botvac Connected.
iRobot Roomba 960P
The Roomba 980P is the top-of-the-line model, and it's better on its predecessor in many ways. It is smarter, stronger and better at picking up pet hair. It is equipped with a remote.
The bin is situated behind the robot. It is opened by pressing a button to release dirt or other debris. The mobile app of iRobot lets you select your cleaning preferences, see a map of the area that has been cleaned and set up your robot to clean specific days of the week.
The 980 does not have a display, nor a manual control. This is a major disadvantage for a vacuum that relies heavily on its intelligent capabilities. Its rivals, like Neato's Botvac Connected or LG's RoboKing range, provide more control options.
4. Roomba 980 from iRobot
This is among the most powerful robot vacuums in our tests, and is a popular option. It picks up dirt, pet hair and crumbs effortlessly on hardwood floors, but also does a great job cleaning carpets. In fact it's Power Boost mode automatically increases suction to help pull those pesky rugs out of hiding.
The iRobot App lets you control the Roomba remotely, schedule cleaning sessions, and create virtual barriers to prevent it from entering areas you don't want it in. It can even recognize and navigate stairs and return to the docking station to recharge if it runs out of power. This model, unlike the previous Roomba models, is able to remember the location it left and resume a previously finished clean. It is also able to run in straight lines, thereby increasing the effectiveness of its coverage.
iRobot Roomba 960S
The latest iRobot robot vacuum is a powerhouse that can quickly and effortlessly remove dirt from carpeted areas and hard floors. It's one of the smarter robots we tested, because of its mapping capabilities and the ability to resume where it left off after a full charge (which removes the frustration caused by Roomba's random navigation).
Multiple sensors and digital cameras make this one of the most flexible vacuums we've ever seen. It can configure a consistent path around your house, remember it to avoid obstacles, and even detect ledges.

It also does an excellent job picking up pet hair. Our tests showed that it picked up 0.2 ounces of pet hair on midpile high-pile, low-pile and hardwood.
Roomba 960XL by iRobot
The 980XL is an excellent robot, and its extra features are well worth the price. It is more sophisticated mapping system than the 900-series and is cleaner both on hard and carpet floors. It is also possible to start it from a distance.
It also features an efficient cleaning system that features 10 times the power-lifting suction of older Roombas and has a dual-swivelling brush that can reach corners and under furniture. It can clean your floors immediately after vacuuming.
The carpet boost is a bit loud. We measured it at around 80 dB--about as loud as an aircraft that is flying in the direction of props. You can create an electronic fence to keep it out of sensitive areas, such as the dog's food bowl and water bowls.
