Origins
The early history of Toto, which began in 1917, was a reflection of Japan's rapid economic growth. In the early years of its existence, the company manufactured goods to meet demand for modern and contemporary urban housing. To achieve this, it employed the first tunnel kiln in the nation that produced ceramics in continuous flow. It also pioneered the use of automation to control production, allowing for more efficiency and consistency.
In the late 1980s, the company began expanding overseas to take advantage of sales and new markets. The company founded the Cera Trading Company to import and sell other products of other manufacturers in order to enhance its own line of sanitary earthenwares and plumbing fittings. This strategy helped increase sales and increased the company's global market share.
In the 1990s, Toto began focusing on research and development of water-related appliances. It also upgraded its system of distribution to better serve customers and improve profit. The company also employed the just-in-time approach to its supply chain management and sales program. This resulted in a greater level of customer satisfaction.
Toto continued to develop toilet technology. Its most recent toilet, for instance, has an extremely powerful tornado flush that is more ecologically friendly than conventional toilets. The company uses recycled water in its manufacturing process and also has a green purchasing policy. Toto also manufactures faucets, bathtubs and hand

The company's first museum opened in the year 2015 and features exhibits on Toto's most iconic products and their evolution as well as its group companies (all that deal with ceramics) as well as the history of plumbing and products like bath units and, in a different gallery, Toto products sold around the world. The museum even includes a bathroom with a WASHLET toilet and other toilet-related innovations.
Before forming Toto, members of the group performed session work for many musicians. Boz Scaggs' album Silk Degrees featured keyboardist David Paich, guitarists Mike Porcaro & Steve Lukather and drummers Jeff Porcaro & Steve Lukather. They also appeared on records by Steely Don, Seals and Crofts and Sonny and Cher.

David Paich's keyboard work was as well more refined, more precise, and less derivative on earlier efforts.
After touring to promote their album, the band recorded their Amsterdam live show which was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. The group released a new studio album a few months later and embarked on a world tour promote the album. During this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.
In 1998, Paich & Lukather began exploring old tapes and demos to find songs that had never been recorded before. It was completed as a double album titled Then & Now in 2001. In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin.
