Pragmatics and Semantics
Many of the current philosophical approaches to pragmatics focus on semantics. For example, Brandom focuses on linguistic meaning (albeit from a pragmatic viewpoint).
Others take a more holistic approach to pragmatics, like relevance theory, that aims to determine how an utterance is perceived by the listener. However, this approach tends to ignore other aspects of pragmatism, such as epistemic debates about truth.
What exactly is pragmatism?
Pragmatism is a philosophical approach that offers a viable alternative to continental philosophy and analytic philosophy. It was conceived by Charles Sanders Peirce. It was expanded by his friend and colleague William James, and later developed by Josiah Royce. It had a significant impact on areas of inquiry that span from theology to philosophy of science however, it also found its place in the philosophy of ethics, politics, philosophy of language, aesthetics, and social theory. The pragmatist tradition continues develop.
The pragmatic maxim is at the center of classical pragmatism. It is a rule that clarifies the meaning of hypotheses through their 'practical implications', or their implications for the experiences of particular situations. This leads to a distinctive epistemological outlook that is a form of 'inquiry-based epistemology' as well as an anti-Cartesian explanation of the rules that govern inquiry. The early pragmatists generally disagreed on the issue of whether pragmatism can think of itself as a philosophical system that adopts a monism about truth (following Peirce), or a broad-based alethic pluralism (James and Dewey).
How to understand knowledge is a major concern for pragmatics. Rorty is one of the pragmatists who is skeptical of theories of knowledge that are built on "immediate experiences". Others, like Peirce and James are skeptical of the theory of correspondence that claims to be true which holds that true beliefs are those that reflect reality in a 'correct' way.
Other pragmatism-related issues include the relationship between belief and reality, the nature of human rationality, the importance of virtues and values and the significance of life. Pragmatists also developed a variety of methods and ideas that include semiotics and the philosophy of language. They also study areas such as philosophy of religion, philosophy, science, ethics and theology. Some, such as Peirce or Royce are epistemological relativism, whereas others claim that this relativism is a mistake. The latter half of the 20th century saw a revival of interest in classical pragmatics. This resulted in a variety of new developments. These include the concept of a "near-side" pragmatics that is concerned with the resolution of ambiguity, indexicals, demonstratives, and anaphors. There is also an "far-side" pragmatics which looks at the semantics in discourses.
What is the connection between what is said and what is done?
Semantics and Pragmatics are often seen as being on opposite sides of a continuum, with semantics on the near side and pragmatics on the far side. Carston, for instance, claims that modern pragmatics follows at least three main lines: those who see it as a philosophy in the tradition of Grice, those who focus its interaction with grammar, and those who are concerned about the interpretation of utterances. What is the relation between semantics and pragmatics?
The study of pragmatics is the study and application of meaning in a language context. It is a branch of linguistics which studies the way that people employ language to convey various meanings. It is often contrasted with semantics, which examines the literal meaning of words within a sentence or larger chunk of discourse.
The relationship between pragmatics, semantics and their interrelationships is complicated. The main distinction is that pragmatics takes into account other aspects besides literal meanings of words, such as the intended meaning as well as the context in which a statement was made. This gives a more nuanced understanding to be made of the meaning of a statement. Semantics also concentrates on the relationship between words whereas pragmatics is more focused on the relationship between interlocutors and their context features.
In recent years the neopragmatism movement been heavily focused on metaphilosophy and the philosophy of language. As such, it has largely left behind the metaphysics of classical pragmatism and value theory. However, a few neopragmatists are developing a metaethics based on the pragmatics of classical pragmatism and experiences.

While pragmatism is a viable alternative to the analytic and continental philosophical mainstream, it's not without criticism. Some philosophers, like, have said that deconstructionism isn't an original philosophical concept and that pragmatism merely represents a form.
In addition to these criticisms, pragmatism itself has been questioned by technological and scientific advancements. For instance, pragmatists have struggled with reconciling their views on science and the evolution theory which was conceived by Richard Dawkins, a non-pragmatist.
Despite these challenges the pragmatism movement continues to grow in popularity worldwide. It is a third alternative to Continental and analytic philosophical traditions, and has a wide range of practical applications. It is a growing field of inquiry that has numerous schools of thought forming and incorporating pragmatism's principles into their own philosophy.
