On January 14, 2006, he was nominated as an honorary guide. Brian Howe spent four and a half years outside the London Parliament to highlight the plight of Iraqi children. After the law was passed banning spontaneous free speech within a one-kilometre radius of the House of Commons, Brian Howe was arrested and told the police, "I'm not disturbing the peace, I'm fighting for peace." His sleeping bag was so close to the Prime Minister's bedroom that he could be heard if he shouted, but he was there before the law came into force. A High Court ruling gave him immunity. Police harassment continued, but Howe returned to Parliament Square and set up a peace camp. He has been vigilant there since June 2001. (The protests have now ended after about 10 years.)
