The group Toto was formed in the year 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also acclaimed studio musicians with Boz Scaggs at the time) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. Their name is derived from the Latin word which means "all inclusive," the group was determined to explore every musical style.
In 1981, Toto's third album Turn Back was a complete failure However, they resurface with their fourth release Isolation which contains two hits including the title track and Roseanna. The album and tour makes them a household name around the world.
After a short hiatus, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. The album is a departure from the ballads on previous albums, and also features some heavy rock. It was their first platinum album in North America.
In the course of recording the band's fifth album, the band loses their manager and are put in financial difficulty. They decide to change their name and record a new album with an entirely new producer. Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, replaces Fergie Frederiksen as the lead vocalist. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman and provides the band with a much-needed boost.
In 1999, the band releases Mindfields and begins an extensive worldwide tour. After a few weeks in Europe The band then travels to Japan for sold-out shows. After a brief break, Toto resumes recording and begins recording their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes a cover of Weezer's song Hash Pipe in response to the band's cover of their hit Africa during the recent tour. Toto's touring group includes drummer Lenny Castro and bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem Von Schroeck.
