Replacement Upvc Window Handles
Almost all
replacement upvc window handles include everything you require, however if the previous handle had pins or screws that were holding it, they must be removed. Remove the'snap-in' covers at the base of the handle.
You'll need to determine what kind of window lock and handle you are replacing. This is vital!
Espag
Espag handles are a multipoint lock system that can be fitted to casement windows, such as uPVC and wooden double glazing. They have a 7mm square spindle which fits into the gearbox on the window made of uPVC. When the handle is turned, it triggers with a series of locks that run around the perimeter of the window. Espag handles are also known as shootbolt handles and offer additional security when compared to the standard single point lock found on older window frames.
There are many options available with cranked and inline handles that can be operated using either the left or right hand. You can also find ergonomic handles that enhance the appearance and feel of your window, as well as handles.
If you're planning to replace your existing uPVC window handle with an espag handle, you'll have to determine the size of the spindle installed and measure it from the base of the handle to ensure that you order the correct replacement. This measurement, referred to as the step height, will help you select the perfect uPVC window handle for your home.
You may have to remove any screw covers that protect the screws that hold the handle in place and if this is the case, you can use the screwdriver or pliers to take out the pins holding the handle. After you have removed the screws or pins that hold the spindle in place then you can remove the handle.
After removing the handle, you can access the locking mechanism inside the frame of the windows and take out the cockspur block that is attached adjacent to the handle. This will allow the window to be opened. The replacement uPVC window handles you've ordered should now be able to fit on the cockspur wedge block and then into the handle spindle and allow the window to be opened again. Ideally, you should replace the cockspur wedge block a new one when changing your uPVC handle to ensure that it is securely secured.
Cockspur
Cockspur handles are found on older uPVC or aluminium windows. The handle closes and turns into a wedge-shaped plastic catch. (Not to be confused with timber latches, which are also covered in this section.) The handles are available in lockable and nonlockable models. They are available in a range of different nose heights to fit the frame.
The handle is locked by the small triangle-shaped spur (spur) which is fixed to the frame. They are usually one-way handles, however a locking deadlock cylinder can be fitted for additional security.
Similar to Espag handles, the replacement handles for cockspur handle are simple to install all you need is an additional set of screws (supplied) and the proper backset. The backset is the distance between the baseplate of the window to the underside of the handle's nose. Aluminium window frames are generally 9mm wide, while UPVC is 21mm wide. There are a myriad of variations however it is essential to measure before buying the handle (see video below for how).
This type of window handle can be substituted by unscrewing the current handle and taking off the spindle, or in certain cases the whole handle assembly. The
glass replacement for windows handle is then screwed in place by using a pair of pozidrivs screws. The pozidriv screw is available in a brass or a zinc finish to match the existing hardware. There is also an option of self-locking pozidriv screws.
It is a simple to install cockspur handle replacement that is perfect for repairing or replacing old uPVC windows, they have an universal design that makes them suitable for most profiles and backsets. Each handle is supplied with 3 packers that vary in thickness. They are fitted to the underside of the handle nose and can be combined in a variety of ways to create backsets of 9, 13mm 17mm, 21mm and. These handles are available in left and right-handed versions, and in locks and non-lockable versions. They also come with a variety of nose heights.
Turn and Tilt
The premium European window style with tilt and turn has been in use in Europe for a long time, however it's only just beginning to gain popularity in the United States. They combine the functionality of three different window styles into one: tilt, pivot, and in-swing. They are perfect for older homes since they are more breathable than standard windows.
When closed, tilt and turn windows lock as windows that are fixed in normal fashion. However, by turning the handle 90@ or 180@ (depending on the type of tilt and turn window) the sash can be opened upwards and the window will tilt in order to allow air circulation through the opening at the top of the frame. This is a great method to ventilate without having to open the large windows that could be dangerous.
If the handle is turned 90or 180 degrees the sash will be fully opened like a door. This allows for full air exchange which is especially useful in draughty rooms or houses where smoke or other odors are likely to accumulate. It also makes cleaning the exterior of the
glass replacement in windows much more easy because it can be done inside the home - a task that often requires ladders that are not safe.
Tilt and turn windows are also very secure. They are very difficult to open when they are locked in the closed position. They also have double seals that stop rainwater from entering your home while it is in the tilted position, or in swing. This feature is particularly useful for older homes where intruders tend to target windows that can be opened using side hinges.
Spade
There are many types of window handles that can be installed to double-glazed windows made of upvc. The two main types are Espag handles and Cockspur handles, then there's also tilt and turn handles, spade or blade handles and monkey tail handles. The type of handle you pick will be based on your preferences as well as the type of windows you have.
You must be aware of how your current handle is attached to the frame to select the correct replacement upvc handle. This is known as handing and is a vital element to consider, particularly when purchasing online since some handles aren't suitable for all windows. For example, some handles for cockspurs are angled, while others are straight and will either turn left or right. You will also need to know what the spindle length is that is the distance from the base of the handle to the top of the handle.
Another crucial aspect of selecting the correct handle is knowing whether your
windows replacement need a restrictor or not. They are generally employed in high-rise flats or commercial structures, but are not required for domestic homes. Additionally, you must take into consideration step height, which is the distance from the top of the screw plate to the top of the handle.
The word spade is derived from Old English spadu, spaedu or spada and has been translated into a variety of languages including German spaten and Low German spathen. During the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s in New York City the word spade was used to mock black people. Spade has since risen to prominence in pop culture and is a widely-respected symbol of African American heritage and pride.
It is essential to choose the correct size when replacing a handle made of Cadenza. Handles are available in straight and angled versions that differ by a few microns. The handle head can change between a D and a T-shaped shape, or be without handles at all.
