In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the group in the wake of drug charges and the group continued to perform as a trio featuring Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.
Toto released Isolation despite the turmoil. It wasn't as well-liked as IV. However, the band was able to release a chart-topping album in 1992 with Kingdom of Desire. This album marked Toto's final lineup and the debut of Simon Phillips, a new singer.

The drummer Bobby Kimball's increasing proficiency was evident in the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. After touring to promote their album, the group recorded the band's Amsterdam live performance that was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set titled Falling In Between. By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure and singer Williams suffered from a bad laryngitis condition which hampered his singing. Additionally, Hungate returned to Nashville as a drummer, and Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.
Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the original members of Asia, met in England in the beginning of 2006 to discuss the possibility that the group could be reformed. This lineup, minus Howe (who was a member of Yes at the time), eventually became known as Toto XIV and toured extensively.
