The band Toto was formed in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also acclaimed studio musicians who worked with Boz Scaggs at the time) and singer/bassist Bobby Kimball. Toto's third release, Turn Back, was an unfulfilling success in 1981. However they made amends with their fourth album, Isolation, which contained two songs that were hits with the title track and Roseanna. The album and tour makes them a household name throughout the world.
After a brief hiatus, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. It is a departure from the ballads that were featured on previous albums and features some heavy rock. This album was their first album to go platinum in North America.
When they record the band's fifth album the band loses their manager and is put in financial difficulty. They decide to record a new album and change their name to a different producer. Lead vocalist Fergie Frederiksen leaves the band and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of the legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman, and provides the band with a much-needed boost.
The band released Mindfields in 1999 and embarks on a massive worldwide tour. After several weeks in Europe The band then travels to Japan for sold-out shows. After a short break, Toto resumes recording and goes on to record their first live album titled Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes a cover of Weezer's song Hash Pipe in response to the band's cover of their hit Africa on the recent tour. Toto's touring band includes drummer Lenny Castro and bassist Shannon Forrest, as well as keyboardist Shem Von Schroeck.

Toto returned to touring in 2012 following the release of their album 40 Trips Around The Sun.
The album marked a return to form for the band and the tour was accompanied by sold-out shows in North America and Europe. The reunion of Toto gained momentum with the return of bassist Shem Von Schroeck and guitarist Steve Lukather.
