Line-up
Turn Back, the band's third studio album is an ode to the traditional sextet style, and it was a more consistent, more powerful effort that had a more grittier edge. The edgier sound of Turn Back reflected the maturation in the group. The drummer Bobby Kimball's increasing proficiency was evident in the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. Keyboardist David Paich's work was sharper, more intricate and less cloned on previous efforts.
After touring to promote their album, the group recorded their Amsterdam live concert which was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. The group released a new studio album a few months after and embarked on a world tour support it. During this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.
In 1998, Paich & Lukather began searching through old tapes & demos to find songs that hadn't been recorded prior to. The album was released in 2001 as a double album titled Then and Now. It was the band's first album without the single track "A". The album also contained an previously unreleased track called "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth record, Old Is New was not a commercial success and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis that restricted his singing capabilities. In addition, Hungate returned to Nashville, while drummer Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.
Downes and the other members of Asia--Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened a meeting in England in the early part of 2006 to discuss the possibility of reforming the group.
