Toto was founded in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also acclaimed studio musicians working with Boz Scaggs) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. The name of the group came from the Latin word that means "all-encompassing" and was determined to explore every musical style.
In 1981 the third album by Toto Turn Back was a flop however, they bounce back with their fourth album Isolation which contains two hits including the title track and Roseanna. The album and tour makes them a household name throughout the world.
After a brief hiatus, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. The album is an departure from the ballads on previous albums and includes some heavy rock. This album was their first to go platinum in North America.
During the recording process for the fifth album The group loses its manager and faces financial difficulties. They decide to change their name and record a new album with a new producer. The lead vocalist Fergie Frederiksen leaves the band and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of the legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph is a more natural frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a needed boost.
The band released Mindfields in 1999 and embarks on a massive worldwide tour. After several weeks in Europe The band then travels to Japan for sold-out shows.
