Mesothelioma and Work Exposure
People who work with asbestos are at a higher risk of mesothelioma. Firefighters, construction workers and military veterans are at higher risk.
The lining of the lung (pleural mesothelioma) or abdomen, is the most common site of mesothelioma. In rare cases, it may cause damage to the testicles or heart.

Signs and symptoms
The tissues that connect your stomach, lungs and the heart are known as mesothelium. Mesothelioma is a condition that occurs in the mesothel which is when cells multiply uncontrollably. It is believed that asbestos legal (

As tumors develop, they may press against nerves and other organs. Certain types of mesothelioma can be very aggressive, however even the most severe form has a better chance of responding to treatment than some other cancers, like breast or colon cancer.
Mesothelioma can be difficult to identify because it is a rare affliction. The initial symptoms are often misinterpreted as other conditions and the mesothelioma delay period makes it difficult for doctors to connect the symptoms to asbestos.

Pleural mesothelioma is by far the most common mesothelioma type and accounts for 80% of cases. Peritoneal mesothelioma, a rare type of mesothelioma that affects the abdominal lining. A further rarer type of mesothelioma develops in the heart's lining and is known as pericardial melanoma.
Symptoms of mesothelioma can resemble the symptoms of other illnesses and conditions that make it difficult to diagnose. It can take up to 50 years before symptoms show. It's difficult to know the frequency of monitoring symptoms or how to detect them early.
The exposure to asbestos in the past is the main risk factor for mesothelioma but other factors such as age, genes and smoking can increase a person's risk of developing the disease. Certain studies suggest that the use of a specific X-ray technique in the workplace may increase a person's risk of developing mesothelioma. However, this hasn't been proven. A family history of asbestos-related diseases or mesothelioma raises the chance of developing mesothelioma.
Treatment

Epithelioid mesothelioma is by far the most prevalent type, accounting for about 60 to 70% of all diagnosed cases. Sarcomatoid mesothelioma is responsible for 10 percent to 15 percent of cases and is more invasive than other mesothelioma types. Biphasic mesothelioma is a mix of sarcomatoid and epithelioid cells, and it occurs in between 30 and 40 percent of cases. In rare instances there is a genetic mutation that can cause mesothelioma. Patients who have a family history of mesothelioma should consult their physician about genetic testing to determine their risk for the disease.
Prognosis
Mesothelioma, as with other cancers, is triggered when the DNA of a cell undergoes mutations that cause it to expand without being controlled. These cells grow to form the form of a tumor. Scientists don't know what causes mesothelioma but they know that exposure to

The best way to avoid mesothelioma is to limit exposure to asbestos. However, this isn't always feasible. Asbestos-related diseases are more prevalent in older adults. They are mostly males and have male gender. These groups were more likely to be employed in blue-collar positions or in the Navy prior to asbestos regulation.
